what do you need?

  • 225 g unsalted butter (at room temperature)

  • 150 g caster sugar

  • 8 g vanilla sugar

  • 1 egg yolk (that’s the yellow part of the egg)

  • 280 g plain flour

  • A pinch of salt – just a tiny bit, like a magic sprinkle between your fingers

  • Cling film to wrap the dough

These are the ingredients to make 20 cookies.

ready, set, bake!

  1. Time to mix with your muscle power. Put the butter, sugar and vanilla sugar in a big bowl. Baking is even more fun when you do it together! Ask Mum or Dad to help stir or mix until it’s nice and creamy.

  2.  Now add the egg yolk and mix again. Then add the flour and a pinch of salt. Now it’s your turn! Knead with your magic hands until you get a firm dough. Your warm fingers make the dough soft and smooth – it’s like it knows something yummy is about to happen!

  3. The dough needs a little nap after all that kneading. Wrap it in cling film and let it chill in the fridge for at least one hour. Perfect time for a dance, a game, or a little drink.

  4.  Take the dough out of the fridge and roll small balls – about the size of a marble or a grape. Place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper. Flatten them a little with a fork.

  5.  Ask Mum or Dad to preheat the oven to 180 °C (top and bottom heat). Bake the cookies for about 16 minutes, until the edges are golden brown.

  6.  Careful, they’re hot! Let the cookies rest on the tray first. Then move them to a cooling rack. Or… maybe sneak a little taste. But psst… don’t burn your tongue!

And now... let’s enjoy!

You’ve baked cookies like a real chef. That deserves a high five… and maybe a second cookie too.

clever cookie tips for little chefs

  • Dough too sticky? Add a bit more flour.

  • Dough too dry? Warm it up with your hands or add a tiny bit of butter.

  • Rolling it out? Try rolling between two sheets of baking paper – no sticking!
